Scanslation Request #8: Chinmoku no Kantai (Silent Service)

Title: Chinmoku no Kantai (Silent Service)

Author: Kaiji Kawaguchi

Genre: Action, Award Winning, Drama, Military

Demographic: Seinen

Magazine: Morning

Published: 1989 to 1996

Series Status: Completed (32 Volumes with 351 Chapters)

Scanlation Status: Unscanslated

Description: Japan and the United States secretly built the USS Seabat, a high-performance nuclear submarine unlike any other in the world. Funded and technologically supported by Japan, it was Japan's first nuclear submarine, yet it bore the unusual fate of being assigned to the US Seventh Fleet. Shiro Kaieda, renowned for his exceptional maneuvering and caution within the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, was appointed captain.

However, Kaieda suddenly abandoned command during a sea trial and submerged into the deep sea. The US military considered the Seabat an enemy and assembled the Third and Seventh Fleets in the South Pacific to sink it. But the Seabat boldly surfaced directly in front of the USS Carl Vinson, the largest aircraft carrier in the fleet, declaring itself the independent nation of Yamato to the entire world.

Notes: A very notable manga, it was originally made into an anime television special and original video animation (OVA) series by Sunrise and then recently received a live-action series + films. It caused many arguments among international critics that the series promoted the idea of militarism.

The manga was discussed in the Japanese Diet and was popular with members of the Self-Defense Force. Won the 14th Kodansha Manga Award for General Manga in 1990, which it shared with Harold Sakuishi’s (Author of BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad) manga Gorillaman.

You may know Kaiji Kawaguchi from his other manga Eagle: The Making of an Asian-American President & Zipang. This is one of many of his works still fully unscanslated.
